Did Nonfarm Payrolls Mark The Beginning Of The End?

A strong open followed by sustained selling on Friday puts investors back in a nervous mood amidst a seasonally weak month.
My approach is to be selective in the current environment. Some names are starting to see “risk off” signals from our ML models.

1. US Nonfarm Payrolls
The US added only 22k net new jobs in August, significantly below the consensus estimate of 75k.
Even worse, we now see a further downward revision of the June data, which enters negative territory for the first time since 2021.
Average hourly earnings did come in line with expectations, now rising at 3.7% YoY, the lowest in the past year.
Friday’s labour market data will put the Fed in significant discomfort. Thursday’s CPI data may not matter all that much ahead of the September FOMC.
TLT surged significantly in response to the nonfarm payrolls data, alongside GLD.
Equities rose at the market open but closed the day flat.
